We all know that Art
can stimulate debate, but can such debate be used constructively
to help plan the future of a rural community? That’s precisely
what the people of St. Martins, Shropshire will soon find out.

Throughout 2005 artist, Mark Wood, has been working with the
parish of St. Martins on an ambitious pilot scheme that aims
to discover whether art can reach the people that other consultation
methods fail to reach.
The BIG EVENT is an art show
featuring a multimedia projection utilising photographs and video
footage shot in St. Martins mixed with dozens drawings made by
children from the local, Ifton Heath Primary School. The show
will also feature interviews with children and other youngsters
from the area discussing their hopes and thoughts for the future
of the village.

Mark Wood believes that the St Martins art show will enthral
and delight all those who get to see it. November will be a busy
month editing and compiling the series of short films that will
make up the BIG EVENT. Subject to permissions - and the weather
- it is hoped the BIG EVENT will be projected onto a huge screen
outside the Community Centre, lighting up the dark December night.
The BIG EVENT will be available on DVD and will be shown at
other venues throughout St Martins. People attending events will
be given a short questionnaire that will help inform the Parish
Plan.
And that’s not all. Mark will also use the drawings made
at Ifton Heath Primary School to create a five metre long digital
mural depicting the social landscape of St. Martins, as perceived
by the youngsters. The mural will also illustrate what the children
want to see in St. Martins. You may be surprised by the profound
nature of the ideas.
Parish Plans are important documents that are created by local
people. They record opinions about housing, transport, amenities
and other matters of importance. Parish Plan documents have to
be consulted by various levels of government and developers when
they make plans that will affect a parish.
The date for the BIG EVENT will be published soon.
