Hartshill Park - Local Nature Reserve
Commissioned November 2003

I worked with the Friends of Hartshill Park and local residents to explore and formulate ideas for environmental improvements within the park, which is also a designated nature reserve. The Friends of Hartshill Park are a sub-group of the Hartshill Residents Association. Ten artworks were proposed.

All this work was part of a project called:
CREATIVE APPROACHES TO LOCAL ISSUES

In order to explore and demonstrate creative responses to local issues, the Community Facilitation Team of Stoke-on-Trent City Council developed ten projects with THEpUBLIC, West Bromwich, an award-winning community arts organisation. In each of ten community forum areas pilot arts projects were undertaken.

The Hartshill coordinators wish to proceed with the artworks proposed.

Project Feedback
"From the outset this project needed to be consultative, much more of an opportunity to explore ideas rather than delivering any physical outcomes, given the range of different agencies involved in the potential developments. It was important for groups to have this space to explore ideas.

People have thought more deeply about what a nature reserve is. There has been the opportunity for good debate about the function and appropriateness of any art features in such a context.

The groups enjoyed the experience of working with the artist; they felt his approach was right - he was keen to find out what people wanted rather than impose an idea.

The process has helped us to function better as a group. Through discussions, a number of way points were identified in the Park - these were either specific places of interest or sites suitable for some form of art-intervention. This allows The Friends to lobby for the most appropriate Art in the Park as developments proceed."

Who are the THEpUBLIC?

The Public is everyone.
Everyone who's creative
Everyone who has ideas.
You are a member of the public already,
If you've got an idea you want to realise.
The Public is for dreamers, thinkers, doers, lookers.

The Public, formerly known as Jubilee Arts, has been carrying out pioneering community arts work for nearly thirty years in West Bromwich and the surrounding area.

The Public is now taking this experience forward in an exciting project to create the Public Building, the largest community arts development in Europe. The Building will be a place to dream and realise your creativity in an inspiring, hands-on arts space, as well as somewhere you can learn, be entertained and relax.
