The work is a bronze cast taken from a china wash hand basin, it consists
of 15 cross sectional casts of the basin shape. Each piece is mounted on a
square plinth measuring 203mm x 790mm, the size of each casting varies according
to their respective shapes. The number of castings represent the total volume
of water held in the basin and are positioned in rotational order according
to the location within the basin.
Table of Calculations
Is an Oak table that is cut into 125 regular sized pieces each measuring 113mm.
Each piece is an interpreted calculation of the cubic volume of wood used
which is 375mm3 This work is presented as a floor piece but could become a
purpose made wall mounting. Pieces are consecutively weighed and numbered
according to their respective positions as a completed table. This information
is compiled into an A1 size framed wall chart that is supportive to the main
body of work. Piece 3 is deliberately missing, disregarded it demonstrates
an ambiguity by challenging the predictability of the piece.
Matrix
A latex rubber cast of the table top surface from Table of Calculations. This
work depicts the space made by the cutting action of the saw when the surface
was being dissected; the poured Latex has seeped into the wood fibres to display
the cthe concealed spaces within. Measuring 66cm x 133cm the work is wall
mounted and resembles through a strange metamorphosis a table cloth.
Ruler
Painted MDF it measures every inch as one foot in real scale. The piece metaphorically
challenges a prescribed traditional scale of measurement Size 200cm x 46cm
x 3cm.
